The community of Sanibel has taken strides to keep its shops and boutiques from overshadowing the island’s flora and fauna, so you’ll have to look hard to find any garish signs or neon strip malls. The few shopping “malls” on the island feel more like tropical parks dotted with discrete Caribbean beach shacks. Art galleries and antique dealers set up shop along Periwinkle Way, as do gift boutiques and high end clothiers.

The open-air plaza at Periwinkle Place allows shoppers to enjoy lush landscaping while browsing twenty-eight boutiques. Choices include high-end men and women’s apparel, fine jewelry, gifts, gourmet goods, and children’s toys. Between purchases, visitors can stroll beneath the banyan trees then top off their sprees with a meal at one of the plaza’s two restaurants. For even more pampering, try a massage at the plaza’s upscale day spa.
